Dr Leon Cohen
Dr Leon Cohen established Mercy Bariatrics in 2004 in Perth , Western Australia. He has been performing bariatric surgery since 1999 and has extensive experience in laparoscopic banding, Sleeve gastrectomy and revisional bariatric surgery. He has personally performed over 500 Lap sleeve gastrectomies which is the largest individual series in Australia and has been involved in teaching and research into this technique around Australia and Internationally. His other surgical interest are in gastrointestinal surgery and endoscopy.
Outside of medicine his passions are jazz music (he plays Tenor saxophone and is learning the drums), and bushwalking in the Stirling Ranges.
He is married with two sons.

Dr Harsha Chandraratna – Surgeon
Dr Chandraratna is a Liver and Transplant specialist who joined Mercy Bariatrics in 2007 adding Depth to our team. He brings enormous energy and enthusiasm to everything he does and offers surgery at St John’s Subiaco and Murdoch. He is also a consultant specialist at SCGH on their Bariatric Service.
He is married with two children and enjoys good food and fast cars.
Dr Deborah Jenner
Dr Deborah Jenner commenced Bariatric training with Mercy Bariatrics in 2008. She works closely with Dr Cohen on all cases. She is enjoying recommencing surgical practice after a pause for 5 years to start her family.
Dr Sarah Kurian - Specialist Anaesthetist
Dr Sarah Kurian is a specialist Anaesthetist with an interest in Bariatric patients. Nicknamed “ The Meerkat” because of her habit of popping her head up over the drapes to see what the surgeons are up to. Outside of work she can be found paddling her surf ski on the Swan river with two dogs in tow trying to keep up. If you’re not completely entranced by Sarah, then you’re probably not breathing!
Dr David Borshoff -Bariatric Anaesthetist
Dr David Borshoff is a consultant anaesthetist with a specialty interest in Cardiac anaesthesia ( he is on the heart transplant team at RPH ) and bariatric anaesthesia. He has an amazing knack for getting epidurals in to even the hardest patients back.
David has a fine baritone voice and is a lover of music. Ask him to sing for you!
Dr Graeme Johnstone - Bariatric Anaesthetist
Graeme is New Zealand Born and completed his Anaesthetic training in Australia. He mainly works with
Gastric Banding patients on Thursday afternoon. He has a quiet calming manner which patients find quite soporific. Watch out, you will be asleep before the first drugs hit you!
Outside of Medicine his interest are Wine collecting ( he has a cellar to die for) Sailing and bushwalking.
Dr Neil Hewett - Surgical Assistant
Dr Neil Hewett has been assisting Dr Cohen in theatre for the last four years. He has an almost telepathic ability to predict the next surgical move!
Always cheerful and enthusiastic, even when called from home in the middle of the night to assist with an emergency case.
Neil is besotted by his two young sons ,despite quite a few sleepless nights recently. He is quiet a respectable
musician on lead and rhythm guitar. Watch out for him playing at the end of year Bariatrics cocktail party!
